Browser Security Settings

Overview

The Internet is a means of universal interconnection. Now we are all a single click away from everything. We are a single click from information sources from across the world, and we are also far-too accessible to the sort of elements we would prefer not have access to our computers and information. The Internet is, in short, a double-edged sword. The security measures we take against the dangers of the Internet can also be a double edge sword and can hinder our ability to make use of the Internet. The objective of this document is to offer guidance to find a middle ground between security and utility.

Some may have trouble using this site because of security and privacy settings in their browsers. There are two possible ways in which security settings can cause problems when you try to use this site: cookies and forms.

Cookies

Cookies are small nuggets of information left on your computer when you visit a particular web site. When you revisit the site, that information will be available to the site you visit. Some Internet companies have been criticized because they attempt to compile information about their users by using cookies. This is NOT how cookies are used by TheFlyingPig.Com. Cookies are used by TheFlyingPig.Com to provide convenience that would not otherwise be possible to offer. For example, when you first arrive on our site, cookies will allow us to know who you are without requiring you to sign-on. If the security settings on your browser are set too high, cookies cannot be used and you will be required to sign-in every time you arrive at our site. The methods for enabling cookies are discussed below for various types of browsers.

Forms

Forms are the method by which information is submitted back to TheFlyingPig.Com. For example, when you click the "submit" button to edit your address or phone number you are actually submitting a form of information across the Internet. If the security settings on your browser are set too high, you will not be able to submit forms and you will not be able to do things like input your email address, etc. It is reasonable to relax the security settings to the extent that forms may be used.

The following are links to instructions for common browser types. If you don’t find your browser on the list, then, using the help menus provided with your browser, attempt to turn on cookies and enable the submission of un-encrypted forms (many browsers have this enabled by default). If problems persist send an email to .

How to find your browser version

To find your browser version you can usually choose the "About" item on the "Help" menu. The version will generally be shown there.

Click on one of the following:

MS Internet Explorer v5.x

MS Internet Explorer v6.x

Netscape v6.x

Netscape v7.x

MS Internet Explorer v5.x

Open your browser and choose "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu. Click the "Security" tab. You will see four icons in a box at the top labeled "Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings." Make sure the "Internet" icon is selected. Below that you will see another section of the window labeled "Security level for this zone." There are two possible states for this section. In one state you will see a vertical slider. When you drag the slider up and down the security level changes from "Low" to "Medium-low" to "Medium" to "High." The slider should be set on "Medium." Click "OK" and you are done. However, you will not see a vertical slider if you have customized your settings.

If you have customized your settings, you will not see a vertical slider. You can click on the "Default Level" button to change your settings to the "Medium" level, or if you wish to keep your custom settings you can click on the "Custom Level" button. In the list of settings that pops up scroll down a bit to the "Cookies" section. You must set one or both of the cookies settings to either "Enable" or "Prompt." Setting either of them to "Prompt" is likely to be very annoying as you will be getting frequent requests to accept or reject cookies. The least cookie intensive option would be to enable "Allow per-session cookies (not-stored)." In this case you would need to sign-on each time you check your shopping cart. If you choose to enable "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer" you will be recognized when you visit the site and you will only need to sign-on once each time you place an order.

If you choose to keep your custom settings, you will also need to scroll a bit further down to the "Miscellaneous" section where you will find the "Submit non-encrypted form data" setting. Set this to "enable" or "prompt." Click "OK" twice and you will be ready to go.

Secure Web Pages

Normally you will not need to worry about this, but it could happen that your browser's capacity to interpret secure pages will get turned off. In the course of viewing pages on the site the browser will be switched from secure mode to non-secure mode and back as needed.  If your browser's capacity to interpret secure pages is turned off you will not see the encrypted pages, rather you will see a message that says "The page cannot be displayed."  If this happens go to the "tools" menu and select "Internet Options" and from that dialog select the "Advanced" tab.  Scroll down to the bottom to a group of settings under the heading "Security."  Under that heading either "Use SSL 2.0" or "Use SSL 3.0" or both must be checked.  Normally both are checked.  If you have some reason to uncheck one of them fine, but if you uncheck both of them our site will not be useable.

You can click on the "Default Level" button to change your settings to the "Medium" level, or if you wish to keep your custom settings you can click on the "Custom Level" button. In the list of settings that pops up scroll down about half way to the "Miscellaneous" section where you will find the "Submit non-encrypted form data" setting. Set this to "enable" or "prompt." Click "OK" and then click on the "Privacy" tab at the top of the window.

In the privacy settings window again there are two possible configurations that you may see. The most likely is that you will see a vertical slider. Make sure that this is set no higher than "Medium High." If you see "Custom -Advanced or imported settings" then click the "Advanced" button. Select the "Override automatic cookie handling" check-box and the "Always allow session cookies" check-box. This is the least cookie intensive way to use TheFlyingPig.Com site. If you wish to be recognized by TheFlyingPig.Com and not requested to sign-on each time you check your shopping cart, you can also select to "Accept" or "Prompt" for "First-party Cookies." Click OK twice and you are done.

Netscape v7.x

Open your browser and choose "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. Double-click "Privacy & Security" to expand that category and then select "Cookies." Any setting other than "Disable Cookies" will generally be fine. But, if you have selected "Enable cookies based on privacy settings" and if you have customized your cookie settings, you will need to make sure that at least session cookies are enabled. If you have problems and if you have customized your cookie settings, click "View" next to "Enable cookies based on privacy settings." In the resulting dialog, if you have selected "Custom" then the least cookie intensive setting that will work with this site is to choose "Session" in the "First party cookie" column of the "Site has no privacy policy" row.

Note that TheFlyingPig.Com does have a privacy policy and we do not give out your information except as is required in shipping merchandise. This fact is not presently detectable by browsers, so the appropriate settings are in the "no privacy policy" category.

Click "OK" twice and you are ready to go.
